Health Report Delays Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial To October 16

THE Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned the trial of the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, on terrorism-related charges to 16 October 2025.

Justice James Omotosho made the ruling on Wednesday, citing the inability of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to conclude and submit its report on Kanu’s health status.

At the previous sitting, the court had directed the NMA President to constitute a panel of medical experts to investigate claims regarding the deteriorating health of the defendant. The panel’s report is expected to determine whether Kanu is medically fit to continue with his trial.

Justice Omotosho stated that the adjournment would allow the NMA sufficient time to complete its assessment and present its findings before the court.

Upon submission of the report at the next sitting, the court is expected to proceed with the continuation of the trial, during which Kanu will open his defence. This follows the court’s earlier decision to dismiss his no-case submission, ruling that he has a case to answer in the terrorism charges brought against him by the Federal Government.
