The suspect, identified as Ifeanyi Eze Okorienta and popularly known by the alias Gentle de Yahoo, was apprehended during a security operation carried out by troops of the 34 Artillery Brigade in collaboration with other security agencies. The arrest took place at his hideout in Aku-Ihube, Okigwe Local Government Area of the state.
Military authorities disclosed that the raid not only led to Okorienta’s capture but also resulted in the seizure of a cache of arms and other incriminating items. Recovered from the hideout were an English pistol, 120 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, 25 rounds of 7.62mm NATO, a cartridge, six mobile phones, military and police uniforms, as well as a German flag.
The Nigerian Army described Okorienta as a significant figure in IPOB/ESN’s activities in the South-East, where the separatist group has been accused of orchestrating violent attacks, enforcing illegal sit-at-home orders, and targeting security operatives.
The arrest comes amid heightened military operations in the South-East, aimed at curbing the activities of IPOB and ESN, which the Federal Government has designated as terrorist organisations.
Security analysts say the capture of a high-profile commander such as Okorienta may represent a major blow to the group’s operational structure in Imo State and could help stem the wave of insecurity in the region.
The Army has assured the public that investigations are ongoing and reiterated its commitment to restoring peace and stability in the South-East.
