THE Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, has condemned the actions of several policemen caught on video assaulting a young man near the Asaba Specialist Hospital, vowing immediate disciplinary measures and a zero-tolerance approach to police brutality.
The disturbing footage, which circulated widely on X (formerly Twitter) and other social media platforms on Sunday, prompted swift response from the Delta State Police Command.
In a statement released today, CP Abaniwonda confirmed that the officers involved have been identified and detained.
Their team leader, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, has also been issued a formal query.
“I want to make it clear that such behaviour is completely unacceptable and not reflective of the values of the Delta State Command,” said CP Abaniwonda.
“The officers will be decisively dealt with in accordance with the law. Under my watch, there is no room for such misconduct.”

An orderly room trial—an internal police disciplinary procedure—has been initiated, and the Commissioner assured the public that justice would be served swiftly.
CP Abaniwonda reiterated the command’s commitment to upholding human rights and called on all police officers in the state to maintain the highest standards of professionalism.
“We are here to serve and protect, not to intimidate or harass. I expect every officer to respect the fundamental rights of citizens as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he added.
The Commissioner urged the public to remain calm, assuring that the erring officers would face the full weight of the law.
He also encouraged citizens to report any instances of police misconduct through the command’s control room lines or social media channels.
