THE Oyo State Police Command has issued a stern warning that it will arrest and prosecute anyone found disseminating false information regarding the recent abduction of school children and teachers in Oriire, Ogbomoso, vowing to crack down on social media misinformation that threatens national security.
In a statement released on Monday, the Command dismissed as “entirely unfounded” a viral social media video alleging that the abducted victims had been transported to Kaduna State by helicopter. The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, described the video as lacking any credible basis and falling short of the standard of authenticity required for matters involving sensitive security operations.
The warning comes amid growing public anxiety following the abduction, which has prompted intensive rescue efforts across the region.
‘False Narratives Undermine Security Sacrifices’
The Police Command expressed profound concern over what it described as the “deliberate spread of misinformation,” warning that such false narratives were capable of causing unnecessary panic, eroding public confidence and undermining the sacrifices being made by security personnel engaged in the rescue mission.
“Individuals or groups found to be originating or circulating malicious information intended to cast doubt on the professionalism and commitment of security institutions will be identified and prosecuted in accordance with the law,” the statement read.
The Command assured residents that intensive rescue operations remain ongoing, noting that security and intelligence agencies have significantly strengthened efforts aimed at securing the safe release of the abducted victims and reuniting them with their families.
Security operatives are also working to ensure the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the abduction.
Sowore’s Claims Spark Controversy
The false claims emerged following an interview given by Omoyele Sowore, the African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate for the 2027 election, who alleged from Kuje Correctional Centre that the children had been moved to Kaduna State.
Speaking while on remand in a separate legal matter, Sowore expressed concern over the children’s safety, though he failed to provide any evidence to support his assertion. He argued that the uncertainty surrounding the children’s whereabouts highlighted the urgency of intensified rescue efforts and claimed that the prolonged captivity had heightened anxiety among families and supporters.
Police Urge Public Caution
The Command has urged residents of Oyo State and the general public to remain calm, vigilant and supportive of ongoing security operations, while relying solely on information disseminated through official channels and verified sources.
Reaffirming its commitment to the protection of lives and property, the Oyo State Police Command assured that every available resource was being deployed to ensure the safe return of the abducted children and teachers.
The police emphasised that official updates would be provided through proper channels as the rescue operation progresses, urging the public to refrain from sharing unverified information that could jeopardise the ongoing efforts.
