THE Anambra State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into a suspected child trafficking incident at Divine Mercy Hospital, located on Eze Iweka Road, Awada, Obosi, in the Idemili North Local Government Area.
The investigation was triggered after officers from the Awada Divisional Headquarters rescued a female suspect, identified as 37-year-old Anurika Nweme, from an angry mob that had descended on the facility.
According to eyewitness accounts, the suspect allegedly gained access to the hospital premises on the afternoon of 23rd June 2026 while wearing attire resembling that of a nurse. She was reportedly observed making secret video recordings of newborn babies in the maternity ward.
When hospital staff and other individuals present confronted her, she claimed to be an employee of the hospital. However, upon verification, the hospital management confirmed that she was not a member of their staff.
In a statement released on Thursday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that the suspect is currently in protective custody and is assisting investigating officers in identifying others who may be involved in the alleged trafficking network.
“The suspect is currently in protective custody and assisting the investigating police officers in identifying others involved,” Ikenga stated.
He added that further developments on the investigation will be communicated as they unfold.
