A 20-year-old man, Pascal Ogbogu, has been taken into custody by the Anambra State Police Command for the alleged murder of his 56-year-old father at Abatete in Idemili North Local Government Area.
The arrest followed a distress report received by police on the evening of Tuesday, August 25, 2026, after the suspect allegedly attacked his father with a machete and fled the scene.
Swift Response by Police and Vigilante
According to preliminary information from the Command, operatives of the Eziowelle Police Division, working alongside family members and personnel of the Abatete Vigilante, mobilised swiftly to the scene.
Upon arrival, officers reportedly discovered the deceased lying in a pool of blood with a deep machete wound to his throat. The victim’s remains were subsequently evacuated to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
The suspect, who had fled immediately after the incident, was arrested in the early hours of Wednesday, August 26, following a coordinated operation involving police and members of the Abatete Vigilante. The Command noted that timely information and cooperation from community members played a significant role in tracking and locating the suspect.
CP Commends Community Collaboration
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police for Anambra State, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, commended the family members, community members, police operatives and vigilante personnel for their prompt response and cooperation.
The CP emphasised that effective community participation, timely information sharing and a strong partnership between the police and local communities remain critical to successful policing and the protection of lives and property.
While expressing condolences to the family of the deceased, CP Nnanna directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and comprehensive review. He said the investigation would establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure all relevant facts were properly established.
The Commissioner assured the family and the public that the investigation would be conducted professionally, thoroughly and diligently in accordance with the law, and that the suspect would face due process upon its conclusion.
