A 10-year-old child is in critical condition after being shot while playing a door-knocking game in southeast Houston overnight, police have said.
The incident occurred just after 11 p.m. on Saturday near the 9700 block of Mimbrough. According to the Houston Police Department (HPD), the child and friends were playing “ding-dong ditch” when they approached a home in the area.
A resident reportedly came outside and opened fire, striking the child.
Firefighters rushed the child to hospital, where they remain in critical condition.
Police said the suspected shooter eventually surrendered after officers used a bullhorn and ordered him to leave the property with his hands raised.
Witnesses reported seeing a woman and a young child in the doorway of the house during the standoff. Officers directed them back inside before the man emerged.
