Police Nab Key Suspect in Killing of Pregnant Nurse in Anambra

Two Sisters Stage Kidnap Plot, Demand Ransom From Dad

THE Anambra State Police Command has arrested a prime suspect in connection with the killing of a pregnant nurse in Ogbunike community, Oyi Local Government Area of the state.

The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Chibunna Nwafor, also known as “Ọffọnwatadile”, was taken into custody on 11 February 2026 at his hideout in Umueri community.

The arrest was confirmed in a statement issued on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, who described the development as a major breakthrough in the ongoing investigation.

According to Ikenga, the arrest followed sustained intelligence gathering and collaboration with members of the community.

“The arrest is part of the Command’s ongoing investigation into the death of the nurse and represents a significant breakthrough,” he said.

The victim, Ngozi Ekebe, a native of Ebonyi State, was killed in July 2025 after she was reportedly lured to Ogbunike under the pretext of providing medical assistance.

Police said the suspect had allegedly contacted the nurse, claiming that his mother was ill and required urgent medical attention.

She was later reported missing, and her body was subsequently discovered during investigations in the community.

The police spokesperson disclosed that the suspect has been transferred to a higher investigative formation of the Nigeria Police Force for discreet and comprehensive investigation.

“The suspect has been handed over for further investigative proceedings to ensure that justice is served,” Ikenga stated.

Reacting to the arrest, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, commended residents of the community for their cooperation and timely information, which he said was instrumental in tracking down the suspect.

He reaffirmed the Command’s resolve to ensure that all persons connected to the crime are identified and brought to justice in accordance with the law.

The police added that investigations are ongoing.
