AWKA, ANAMBRA — A suspected vandal met a fiery end on Tuesday after a botched attempt to tamper with electrical equipment left him electrocuted in the heart of Awka.
The incident occurred at a transformer substation on Ogechukwu Street, sending a thunderous explosion through the neighborhood. FirstPower Electricity Distribution Company Ltd. (FPEDL) confirmed the death, stating that the unidentified man paid the ultimate price for his crime.
In a statement released to Stonix News, the company’s Head of Communications, Izunna Okafor, revealed that the explosion was triggered by “unlawful tampering” with the network. Shockingly, the deceased was reportedly clad in a security uniform at the time of the incident, a detail that has raised eyebrows as police launch a full-scale investigation.
“The yet-to-be-identified individual was immediately electrocuted in the process,” Okafor stated. “Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command have since evacuated the corpse and commenced an investigation.”
FirstPower’s Managing Director, Mr. Okechukwu Okafor, did not mince words in condemning the act, warning that vandalism is not just a crime against the power grid, but a death wish.
“These acts do not only cause significant financial losses and service disruptions; they are a direct threat to the lives of the perpetrators and the public,” he said. “This tragic incident is a stark reminder of the deadly consequences of energy theft.”
The firm has renewed its plea to residents and community leaders to act as the first line of defense. They are urging anyone who sees suspicious activity near power installations to immediately alert the company via WhatsApp or SMS at 08161652465, or contact the nearest security agency.
“Protecting this infrastructure is a collective responsibility,” the statement added. “We must work together to ensure that those who seek to plunge our communities into darkness are stopped before they—or someone else—gets killed.”
