OSOGBO — The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Osun State Chapter, has distributed no fewer than 300 motorcycles to security agencies in a major push to enhance public safety across the state.

The official handover took place on Tuesday at the state Police Command, where ALGON chairman, Abiodun Idowu, explained that the move was designed to improve the operational capacity of security personnel, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach areas.

“The motorcycles we are distributing today will enhance mobility, improve response time, and enable our security agencies to access difficult terrains, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach areas,” Idowu said.

“This initiative is aimed at strengthening community policing and ensuring that no part of our state is left vulnerable.”

He confirmed that the distribution covers the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Security (DSS), Civil Defence, vigilante groups, hunters, and local community security agencies.

Idowu praised the dedication and sacrifices of security personnel, describing their courage and resilience as a source of public confidence. “We recognise the risks you take daily, and today’s gesture is a token of our appreciation and support for your invaluable service,” he added.

The ALGON chairman also credited President Bola Tinubu for granting financial autonomy to local governments, noting that such an initiative would have been impossible otherwise.

“The provision of these motorcycles is therefore not only a security intervention but also a practical demonstration of the effectiveness of local government autonomy in Nigeria,” Idowu said.

“We appreciate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for championing the struggle for the actualisation of local government autonomy. Today, we are witnessing some of the fruits it is bringing forth in the development of our communities.”

In his response, the State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, lauded ALGON for what he called a “thoughtful and impactful intervention” and assured the public that the motorcycles would be put to judicious use.

“On behalf of the Nigeria Police Force, the IGP, and other security agencies present here, I sincerely thank ALGON for this thoughtful, impactful intervention,” Gotan said.
