Police foil kidnap, arrest cult suspects, recover arms in Delta

OPERATIVES of the Delta State Police Command have foiled a kidnap attempt, arrested two suspected cultists and recovered assorted weapons in the process.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Bright Edafe, the feats were part of the effort to curb the menace of kidnapping, armed robbery and other related vices in the state championed by the Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda.

Itemizing how the command’s operatives foiled the kidnap attempt, Edafe said on the “13th August 2024, while students of Delta State Polytechnic Oghara were having their graduation ceremony, the DPO Oghara Division received credible information that some suspected kidnappers had already perfected plans to kidnap guests who must have come to attend the ceremony.

“The DPO Oghara Division, CSP Olasunkanmi Musiliu, acting on this information, reacted swiftly, mobilized, and led operatives of Oghara Division to their hideout in a bush along Otefe/ Ovade Legit Road.

“The suspected kidnappers, on sighting the Police, took to their heels and escaped with various degrees of gunshot injuries from the gun duel with the Police.

“One AK-47 rifle, one magazine, one English pump action gun, and one locally-made cut-to-size gun were recovered.”

Relating how some suspected cultists were apprehended
on August 14, 2024 at about 7:59p.m, he said “Police anti-crime patrol team of Oghara Division while on stop-and-search along Otefe Ijomi Community Road, they intercepted a motorcycle carrying one Ovoke Benedict aged 22 yrs, a native of Ughelli North LGA, and a Computer Science student of the Delta State Polytechnic Otefe, Oghara, and one Fredrick Urhoborume “m” aged 23yrs, of Ughelli North LGA, and student of Business Administration, Delta State Polytechnic-Otefe, Oghara.

“The Policemen subjected them to a search during which one locally-made cut-to-size gun with six live cartridges was recovered from them.

“The preliminary investigation revealed that they are suspected to be members of Arrow Barger Confraternity and investigation is ongoing.”

SP Edafe quoted CP Abaniwonda as thanking the good people of Delta State and “urging them to do more by providing useful, credible and timely information to the Police” to help fight against crime and criminality.
