Gunmen Strike Again In Edo: NSCDC Officer Killed, Three Catholic Seminarians Abducted

JUST IN: Terrorists abduct Catholic cleric in Kaduna

TRAGEDY has, once again, struck Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State as suspected kidnappers killed a Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officer and abducted three seminarians from the Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary in Ivianokpodi, Agenebode.

The attack, which occurred around 9 p.m. on Thursday, also left a local vigilante member injured.

The slain NSCDC officer was reportedly attached to the seminary as part of its security detail.

Reverend Father Peter Egielewa, Director of Social Communications for the Catholic Diocese of Auchi, confirmed the incident and expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation targeting Catholic institutions.

According to him, this is the second time in ten months that the seminary has come under attack, following the 2024 abduction of a priest from the same facility.

“We are devastated by the growing threats to our religious institutions,” Fr. Egielewa stated.

“These attacks have become too frequent, and it’s clear that urgent intervention is needed.

“We call on the government and all security agencies to rise up to their responsibilities and protect religious personnel and facilities.”

The latest incident is part of a disturbing trend of violent kidnappings in the region.

In March 2025, Seminarian Peter Andrew was reportedly killed in captivity, while Reverend Father Philip Ekeli was released after a ransom payment.

Just last month, two brothers were abducted and only regained freedom after a ransom of ₦35 million was paid—along with an additional ₦6 million demand from the kidnappers.

The Catholic Diocese of Auchi has now issued a renewed call for comprehensive security operations to end the wave of violence that continues to plague the area.

As of press time, security operatives are said to have launched a manhunt for the assailants, while the community remains in fear and mourning.
