Woman Sentenced To Life For Poisoning Family Of Four

AN Australian woman who killed three people with toxic mushrooms has been sentenced to life imprisonment, with the possibility of parole after 33 years, bringing to an end a trial that gripped global attention.

Erin Patterson, 50, was found guilty in July of triple murder after serving a poisonous beef Wellington lunch to her estranged husband’s parents, along with his aunt and uncle, at her home in 2023.

Supreme Court Justice Christopher Beale, delivering the sentence in Melbourne on Monday, said Patterson had inflicted lasting trauma on her victims and their families.

“Your failure to exhibit any remorse pours salt into all the victims’ wounds,” he told her. “The gravity of your offending warrants the imposition of the maximum penalties for your crimes.”

The trial, dubbed by many as the “mushroom murders,” attracted a media circus, drawing podcasters, film crews and true-crime enthusiasts to the otherwise quiet rural town of Morwell in Victoria, best known for its prize-winning roses.

From New York to New Delhi, audiences followed every twist of the case, the motive for which remains unknown.
