Nigerian Man Arrested In Romania Over Rape, Attempted Murder Of Sex Worker

BUCHAREST authorities have detained a 30-year-old Nigerian national on suspicion of raping and attempting to kill a sex worker in the Romanian capital.

The suspect, whose names were withheld, was placed in preventive custody for 30 days following a ruling by the Sector 6 Court on Friday, 12.

According to investigators, the incident occurred after the man allegedly contacted the woman for her services but failed to provide advance payment.

When she asked him to leave, he reportedly attacked her, choking and sexually assaulting her before attempting to kill her.

The Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Sector 6 Court of Bucharest has charged the suspect with rape, destruction, and home invasion. Prosecutors allege that he also caused damage to the victim’s property during the assault.

Romanian police were called to the scene after the victim managed to raise the alarm. She was later taken to hospital for medical examination and treatment.

The case has drawn significant attention in Bucharest, with prosecutors stressing the seriousness of the charges and the need to protect vulnerable individuals. Preventive custody, commonly used in Romania in cases involving violent crimes, ensures the suspect remains detained during the ongoing investigation.

If convicted, the accused faces a lengthy prison sentence under Romanian criminal law, which prescribes severe penalties for sexual assault, attempted murder, and related violent offences.
