THE Lagos State Police Command has arrested a senior figure in the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Shamsideen Adio, for allegedly beating a dispatch rider to death on Tapa Street, Lagos Island.

CrimesChroniclers reports that the incident occurred on Wednesday following a minor altercation after the victim was accused of scratching Adio’s vehicle. The dispute escalated rapidly, and Adio, allegedly assisted by some of his colleagues, launched a violent assault on the rider, leaving him unconscious.

A journalist, Chris Nwandu, who shared footage of the incident on social media, described Adio as notorious for repeated violent attacks on tricycle (Marwa) operators in the area. He further alleged that only days earlier, Adio had assaulted another operator who was hospitalised and later died of his injuries.

A police source confirmed that the dispatch rider did not survive the assault. “The victim died from the beating, and the suspect has since been arrested. He is currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department,” the source said.

Efforts to reach the Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, for an official statement were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
