A Catholic priest, Rev. Fr Matthew Eya, has been assassinated by unidentified gunmen in Eha-Ndiagu community, Eha-Alumonah, within Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State.
According to reports, the attack occurred on Friday evening while the cleric, who served as parish priest of St Charles Catholic Church, was returning from Enugu, the state capital.
Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants, who were on a motorcycle, intercepted the priest’s vehicle near the site of a Type C hospital project under construction. They allegedly shot at the tyres, forcing the car to a halt, before firing multiple rounds at the priest at close range.
A community source told Daily Post that the attack bore the hallmarks of a targeted assassination rather than a kidnap attempt.
