Edo Security Chief Slumps, Dies Shortly After Speech At Public Event

BENIN CITY, Edo State – The Commandant of the Edo State Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Gbenga Agun, has died after collapsing at a public event in Benin City on Thursday.

The tragic incident occurred at the Bishop Kelly Pastoral Centre shortly after Commandant Agun had delivered a goodwill message.

He was a guest and awardee at a function organised by the International Association of World Peace Advocates (IAWPA).

According to sources, he slumped suddenly and was rushed to the nearby Military Base Hospital on Airport Road. Despite attempts to resuscitate him, he was confirmed dead on arrival.

His death comes just five months after the passing of his mother, Deaconess Grace Busola Agun, in April 2025.

Commandant Agun assumed his post in Edo State in January 2024. During his tenure, he pledged to tackle cult-related violence and vandalism in the state.

In a meeting with the former governor, Godwin Obaseki, he committed to “work with you to make the state peaceful and move forward.” He later reiterated this mission to the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, in March 2024, vowing to “chase out vandals” and secure the lives and property of citizens.

He is remembered as a dedicated and gallant officer committed to his work.
