Troops Foil Terrorist Attack in Sokoto, Seize Weapons, Military Uniforms

TROOPS of the 8 Division Garrison, operating under Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have successfully thwarted a planned terrorist assault in Sokoto State, recovering a substantial cache of weaponry, ammunition, motorcycles, and military uniforms.

The operation, which unfolded following actionable intelligence regarding terrorist movements toward communities in the state, saw soldiers strategically position themselves at Kwanar Jollof in Jangeru Village, Shinkafi Local Government Area. Upon encountering the armed militants, the troops unleashed heavy firepower, compelling the assailants to abandon their mission and retreat from the area.

Among the items seized from the scene were a PKT assault weapon, a significant quantity of ammunition, two motorcycles, chains believed to have been utilised for restraining kidnap victims, and eight pairs of military uniforms. Security analysts have suggested that the uniforms could have been employed by the terrorists to impersonate security personnel during operations, potentially enabling them to bypass checkpoints or deceive unsuspecting civilians.

The successful ambush underscores the efficacy of intelligence-driven operations under the banner of Operation FANSAN YAMMA and reflects the military’s sustained commitment to disrupting terrorist activities across the North-West region. The intervention has been credited with averting what could have been a devastating attack on vulnerable communities.

The seizure of the uniforms is particularly significant, as it may have precluded future incidents in which innocent citizens could have been misled into believing they were interacting with legitimate security operatives—a tactic increasingly employed by militant groups to facilitate abductions and other criminal enterprises.

Furthermore, the recovery of chains commonly associated with hostage-taking operations offers valuable insight into the criminal intentions of the fleeing terrorists. In recent years, armed groups operating across parts of the North-West have increasingly relied on kidnapping for ransom as a primary source of funding, often holding victims in remote camps under brutal and inhumane conditions.

Military authorities have reaffirmed their dedication to sustaining offensive operations against terrorist and bandit groups, while simultaneously urging residents to continue providing credible intelligence to support ongoing efforts to restore peace and security in the region.
