THE Anambra State Police Command has intensified efforts to unravel the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting of two persons in Awka, the state capital, as the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, ordered security and investigative operatives to track down the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
The renewed security measures follow separate gunshot attacks by unidentified gunmen in Awka on Sunday, August 30, 2026, which claimed the lives of two victims.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, preliminary information indicates that three unidentified persons travelling in a silver-coloured Toyota Corolla, with its registration number yet to be ascertained, allegedly shot the victims at separate locations within the state capital.
Ikenga stated that following distress calls, police operatives immediately mobilised patrol teams to the affected areas and commenced efforts to track down the assailants.
The bodies of the victims were recovered along Capital City Road, Amaenyi, and S.M. Okeke Street, Amaikwo, Awka, respectively, and taken to a hospital, where they were confirmed dead by medical personnel. While one of the victims is yet to be identified, the second has been named as Isaac Nwosu, popularly known as “Azia.”
Police recovered ₦7,550, a Moniepoint ATM card, and a pair of slippers from the scenes of the attacks.
CP Holds Strategic Meeting, Vows Justice
In a further move to strengthen the Command’s response, CP Oji Ama on Monday, August 31, held a two-hour closed-door strategic meeting with the Command’s strategic and operational officers. The meeting was aimed at reassessing intelligence and information received from members of the public, particularly in Awka, and reviewing operational strategies to strengthen security and sustain the fight against violent crime.
The Commissioner subsequently paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Nwosu, where he expressed sympathy over the loss and assured the family that the Police would pursue the perpetrators with determination.
CP Oji Ama described Nwosu, popularly known as Azia, as an asset to Anambra State, noting that his death would be felt not only by his family but also by the state and members of the Police Command, particularly because of his contributions to the Command’s security advocacy efforts and other community-oriented initiatives.
He directed the relevant operational and investigative units to intensify efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible for the killings. The Commissioner also reassured the family and residents of the state of the Command’s commitment to ensuring that those behind the attacks are brought to book.
Command Condemns Killings, Intensifies Operations
Earlier, CP Oji Ama had condemned the killings in strong terms, describing the incident as unacceptable and a direct affront to the peace and security of Anambra State. He consequently directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, for discreet and comprehensive investigation.
The Command has also intensified patrols, surveillance, and intelligence gathering across Awka and adjoining communities as part of measures to prevent further attacks and apprehend the suspects.
Appeal for Public Assistance
The Command appealed to residents, community leaders, motorists, business owners, and other members of the public to provide credible information that could assist in identifying the assailants and the vehicle used in the attacks.
The Police urged anyone who witnessed the incidents or has credible information about the suspects, their movements, or the silver-coloured Toyota Corolla used in the attacks to come forward. The Command further assured members of the public that such information would be treated with utmost confidentiality, stressing that community partnership remains critical to effective policing.
The Command called on residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or activities to the police.
