ASABA — Two police officers attached to ‘C’ Division in Asaba have been demoted after they were captured on video receiving money from a motorist through a Point-of-Sale (POS) terminal inside the police station, the Delta State Command has confirmed.

Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, has upheld the findings of an orderly room trial which found Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim guilty of disobedience to lawful order, extortion and discreditable conduct, contrary to the Police Act, 2020.

The officers, whose actions were recorded in a viral video on 13 January 2026, have been reduced in rank, with Inspector Jeremiah demoted to Sergeant and Corporal Ehirim reduced to Constable.

CP Oyeniyi reiterated the Inspector-General of Police’s zero-tolerance stance on extortion and professional misconduct, stressing that IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu has unequivocally prohibited the use of POS terminals and other electronic payment platforms within police stations and formations.

“No officer is authorised to demand or receive money from members of the public under any guise,” the Commissioner warned. “Any officer found culpable will face appropriate disciplinary action.”

The Commissioner urged officers and men of the command to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity and respect for citizens’ rights, adding that the disciplinary action should serve as a deterrent to others.

The command reaffirmed its commitment to discipline, accountability and public trust, and encouraged members of the public to continue reporting cases of police misconduct through the Complaint Response Unit on 09155570008 and 09011112311.
