THE Delta State Police Command has arrested 81 suspects and recoveredS suspected illicit drugs during an intelligence-led raid on identified criminal black spots in Asaba, as part of its ongoing efforts to tackle crime and enhance public safety across the state.
The operation, conducted on Friday, 24 July, was led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Department of Operations, alongside tactical teams of the command. It formed part of the command’s proactive strategy to dismantle criminal networks and deny offenders safe havens.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the operation was based on credible intelligence gathered on criminal activities within the Asaba metropolis.
The statement said a total of 81 suspects, comprising 50 males and 31 females, were arrested during coordinated raids on identified criminal flashpoints.
The suspects were apprehended for alleged offences including the sale and possession of suspected illicit drugs and operating an illegal checkpoint at the Asaba-Onitsha Head Bridge.
Police operatives also recovered large quantities of Tramadol and substances suspected to be Indian hemp during the operation.
In addition, five vehicles were impounded for various offences, including operating an unauthorised taxi park at Pinnacle Junction along Okpanam Road and allegedly facilitating the sale and distribution of suspected illicit drugs in the area.
The police said all suspects, exhibits and impounded vehicles remain in custody while investigations continue.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing and proactive crime prevention.
He warned individuals involved in criminal activities to abandon such acts or face the full weight of the law.
“The Delta State Police Command remains unwavering in its commitment to intelligence-led policing and proactive crime prevention. Those involved in criminal activities should desist or be prepared to face the full weight of the law,” the Commissioner said.
The command reiterated its resolve to sustain intelligence-driven operations aimed at improving security and safeguarding lives and property across Delta State.
