The Nigeria Police Force has taken firm action to combat the spread of fake news, disinformation, and incitement that could undermine public trust and destabilise the nation’s security.
On December 8, 2024, officers apprehended Destiny Ekhorutomuen, a 38-year-old suspect, in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area of Edo State.

Authorities allege that Ekhorutomuen operated multiple social media accounts to spread false and provocative content intended to turn public sentiment against the police.
Force Headquarters Abuja spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stated, “The Force has a zero-tolerance policy towards any actions aimed at destabilising the country or damaging the reputation of our institutions, including the police.”
The police highlighted the dangers posed by such deliberate misinformation, which erodes public trust and weakens societal cohesion.
“The spread of falsehoods presents significant risks to national security,” they added.
The Nigeria Police Force also issued a stern warning against the misuse of social media for spreading fake news or inciting unrest.

“Such acts are criminal and punishable by law,” they emphasised, urging citizens to be responsible in their use of information.
The police reassured the public of their commitment to maintaining law and order, pledging to continue identifying and prosecuting individuals or groups that pose a threat to national peace and security.
