Police Arrest Cult Leaders, Recover Firearms in Delta

DELTA State Police have intensified their crackdown on cultism and armed robbery, arresting multiple suspects and recovering a significant cache of weapons in two operations conducted in 2024 and 2025.

Ekpan Police Raid Uncovers Arms Cache

On 26 July 2024, Ekpan Police operatives raided an apartment in the DSC area following credible intelligence. The raid led to the recovery of one Beretta pistol, two locally made double-barrel guns, two locally made single-barrel guns, one English revolver pistol, one locally made revolver pistol, and one locally made single-barrel pistol. Additionally, officers seized a Beretta magazine, two toy guns, and thirty-five rounds of ammunition.

During the operation, one suspect was initially arrested but later released after it was confirmed he was the father of the primary suspect, who had fled.

Cult Leader Arrested During Ceremony

On 23 December 2024, police received information that the suspect, Prosper Akeni, 32, was spotted in Orhuwhorun town performing a leadership handover ceremony as the head of the Eiye confraternity. Acting swiftly, operatives arrested Akeni, who confessed during interrogation that the weapons recovered earlier belonged to his cult group. He admitted to holding the arms as the group’s leader. Akeni remains in custody, with investigations ongoing.

More Arrests in Oghara and Sapele

In a separate operation on 10 January 2025, the CP-Special Assignment Team (CP-SAT) conducted raids in Oghara and Sapele towns, resulting in the arrests of three suspects and the recovery of additional firearms.

In Oghara, police apprehended Lucky Adoko, 39, and Bishop Bobi, 44, recovering a locally made cut-to-size gun. In Sapele, Junior Umokoro, 24, was arrested with a pump-action gun.

Preliminary investigations confirmed that Bishop Bobi is also a member of the Eiye confraternity. All three suspects are in custody as investigations continue.

The Delta State Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating cultism and armed robbery across the state. Authorities have urged residents to provide timely and credible information to aid in maintaining security and ensuring the safety of communities.
