IN a major security breakthrough, the Delta State Police Command has dismantled a high-profile kidnap gang operating across Delta and Edo states and arrested 184 suspected internet fraudsters in a series of coordinated raids.

The operations, which were led by the Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, as part of a renewed push for intelligence-driven policing, have been hailed as a significant step towards restoring public confidence and safety in the state.

Kidnap Plot Foiled, Ammunition Recovered

Acting on credible intelligence, operatives of the CP-Special Assignment Team (CP-SAT) led by ASP Julius Robinson launched a covert operation on 19 July.

The crackdown led to the arrest of a 35-year-old suspect, Peter Benson of Kwale, Delta State, identified as a spiritual adviser to the criminal syndicate. His confession led police to Edo State, where another spiritualist, 63-year-old Joseph Saniyo, was apprehended in possession of three live tortoises and ritual items allegedly used for fortifying kidnappers.

Further intelligence gathering led to the arrest of the gang’s alleged ringleader, Owei Abebo, alias “Adusa”, aged 42, and two accomplices—Ebi Maye, 41, and Happy Obegha, 39—in Oghara and surrounding areas. Police recovered 247 rounds of live ammunition for a Submachine Gun (SMG) rifle from their hideout. Investigators say the gang was planning multiple high-profile abductions in Sapele and Oghara, which have now been successfully thwarted.

Mass Arrest of Suspected Cybercriminals

In a separate operation on 21 July, officers from Ekpan Division, in collaboration with the Nigerian Army, raided a suspected internet fraud hub at Post Housing Estate, Effurun.

The raid, conducted around 5:45p.m, led to the arrest of 184 individuals allegedly involved in cybercrime and possible terrorism financing.

Among those arrested was 33-year-old Kelvin Odini, believed to be a key figure in the operation.

Commissioner Praises Officers, Vows Zero Tolerance

Commending the efforts of the operatives, CP Abaniwonda praised the officers’ bravery and professionalism, reaffirming the command’s commitment to intensifying intelligence operations, surveillance, and community engagement.

“Our resolve is firm—to make Delta State a no-go area for criminal syndicates and those whose activities threaten peace and development,” the CP said.

He urged the public to continue supporting the police with timely information and assured residents of the command’s unwavering commitment to safety and justice.
