Two Students Injured As Gunman Opens Fire At Colorado School

A student who allegedly opened fire at a Colorado high school, injuring two classmates before turning the weapon on himself, has died, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed.

The shooting occurred at Evergreen High School at around 12:24 p.m. local time. Three students were rushed to hospital in critical condition, including the suspected gunman, who sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His death was later confirmed in a statement posted on social media on Wednesday evening.

Authorities have not released the suspect’s identity. One of the injured students remains in critical condition, while another is in a stable condition. A fourth pupil was also taken to hospital with an unspecified injury.

In a statement, Colorado Governor Jared Polis said he was “devastated” by the incident.

“My heart goes out to the victims and their families as they grapple with this senseless act of violence,” he said.

Following the gunfire, the school was placed under lockdown as officers carried out a sweep of the campus. Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Jacki Kelley described the situation as “the scariest thing you’d think could ever happen” during an earlier press conference.

Kelley declined to provide details about the suspect’s age or gender but remarked: “I don’t know if our suspect is even old enough to drive.” She confirmed that investigators were seeking a warrant to search the student’s home and school locker.

The Sheriff’s Office said the attacker was armed with a revolver handgun. Federal agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, also responded to the scene. FBI Director Kash Patel said the bureau was “aware of the tragic situation unfolding near Denver” and was supporting local authorities.

In the immediate aftermath, hundreds of police officers searched each classroom while parents were instructed to reunite with their children at a nearby primary school.

Jefferson County is also the site of the 1999 Columbine High School massacre, which left 13 victims dead and remains one of the deadliest school shootings in US history.
