Murder: Nigerian Army Says Soldier Acted In Self-defence In Delta incident

The Nigerian Army has stated that a soldier involved in a recent fatal incident in Delta State acted in self-defence during an altercation. This was disclosed in a press release issued on Wednesday by Captain Iliyasu Bawa-Rijau, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Headquarters 63 Brigade, Asaba.

The incident occurred at the Delta Marine Logistics and Technical (DMLT) Estate in Otokutu, Ughelli South Local Government Area on 13 October 2025.

According to the Army, the confrontation involved a soldier on duty and a member of the public. The Army stated that the individual attempted to gain access to the estate along with others without following security protocols, which led to a heated exchange.

The statement read in part: “The confrontation escalated into a physical struggle during which the soldier, acting in self-defence, employed armed combat techniques, resulting in injuries to one of the individuals. The injured person was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment but was later confirmed dead.”

The Army noted that the Otu-Jeremi Police Division was immediately notified and that appropriate procedures are being followed. It also reiterated its commitment to upholding human rights and operating within established rules of engagement.

“The Headquarters, 63 Brigade, wishes to remind members of the public to comply with security checks as part of standard operating procedures. The safety and rights of citizens remain a priority in the discharge of military duties,” the statement added.

In response to the incident, civil rights advocate Comrade Israel Joe expressed concern over the Army’s handling of the matter. He criticised what he described as a lack of transparency and called for a thorough, independent investigation.

Comrade Joe stated his intention to formally write to the Minister of Defence and organise a peaceful demonstration to call attention to the incident.

He questioned the narrative surrounding the deceased individual’s identity and role in the event, and urged the authorities to ensure accountability and clarity in the investigative process.

“It is important that the voices of eyewitnesses and family members are heard and that the process remains fair and impartial,” he said.

While emotions remain high, civil society groups have called for calm and urged all parties to allow proper legal channels to determine the facts of the matter.
