MILITARY officers in Guinea-Bissau on Wednesday announced that they had assumed “total control” of the country, suspending the electoral process and closing all borders just three days after the nation held its legislative and presidential elections.
The declaration came amid rising tension in the coup-prone West African state, where gunfire was heard earlier in the day near the presidential palace in Bissau.
Witnesses reported that soldiers in uniform had taken over the main access road leading to the seat of power.
The announcement was delivered in a formal statement read by military personnel at army headquarters in the capital, according to AFP journalists who were present.
