TROOPS of the 12 Brigade, operating in collaboration with operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), have arrested a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) officer, Air Craftsman (ACM) Anas Muhammed Fakai, for allegedly transporting firearms to Abuja.
Fakai, who bears service number 23/42603, was intercepted at Kabba Junction in Lokoja at about 10:22 p.m. on Tuesday while conveying two pump-action rifles and a Browning pistol.
The suspect, attached to the 107 Air Maritime Group on Airport Road, Benin, Edo State, reportedly confessed during interrogation that he was transporting the weapons to Constable Mohammed Auwal Haliru, who serves at the Police Headquarters, Abuja.
He further alleged that Haliru works as an orderly to a Commissioner of Police at the Force Headquarters.
According to the preliminary report, Fakai also claimed that the firearms were handed over to him for delivery by a Benin-based police officer, Inspector Paul, said to be attached to the Government House, Benin.
Background checks revealed that the suspect attended Nigeria Police Secondary School, Gusau, Zamfara State, between 2015 and 2019.
Both the suspect and the recovered weapons have been taken into custody pending further directives, according to the Special Situation Report.
