A 26-year-old man has been arrested for the alleged murder of his 35-year-old girlfriend in a tragic incident in Ekwulobia, Anambra State.
Anikpe Valentine Chibuike is accused of stabbing Ogechukwu Mmadubugwu in the neck with a knife around midnight on 9th December 2025.
Preliminary investigations indicate she bled to death at the scene.
Operatives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka apprehended the suspect on 7th January 2026.
In a statement, the Police Command has dismissed circulating rumours that the crime was committed by the suspect’s creditors, labelling such reports as false and misleading.
According to a police confession, the suspect alleged he acted on suspicions of his partner’s infidelity.
He further stated that after going bankrupt and accruing significant debt while trying to establish a business for the victim, he became emotionally distressed, leading to the fatal confrontation.
The suspect also admitted to fabricating a kidnap note, claiming he had been abducted by people he owed money, in a deliberate attempt to mislead investigators and facilitate his escape from the crime scene.

As part of standard investigative procedures, detectives have visited the mortuary where the deceased’s body is being held.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the Command noted the tragic incident has sparked local outrage and renewed crucial conversations about domestic violence and relationship-based crimes.
The Command urged the public to always seek lawful and peaceful means to resolve disputes and to report early signs of domestic abuse to security agencies to prevent future tragedies.
