OPERATIVES of the Anambra State Police Command attached to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Awkuzu, have arrested a 28-year-old man, Friday Akonobi, in connection with the abduction and murder of a six-year-old girl in a case allegedly linked to an Enugu-based native doctor.
The arrest was confirmed in a statement issued on Sunday in Awka by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga.
According to the police, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect was involved in the abduction of the late Nwankwo, who was reportedly taken on 10 May 2025 from Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
SP Ikenga stated that during interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to committing the crime alongside four other accomplices who are currently at large.
“The suspect confessed that the victim was taken to Enugu and handed over to an alleged native doctor, Obieze Ezeani, popularly known as ‘Edey Play’ or ‘Edey Show’.
He claimed that he and his accomplices acted as agents for the native doctor, who allegedly paid them the sum of one million naira (N1,000,000) for every virgin girl brought to him,” the statement read.
The suspect further alleged that the young girl was murdered and used for ritual purposes.
He also disclosed that the said native doctor has since been arrested by operatives of the Enugu State Police Command.
While acknowledging the public outrage generated by the incident, especially following the circulation of related videos on social media, the police assured residents that efforts are being intensified to apprehend the remaining suspects.
The Anambra State Police Command reiterated its commitment to ensuring that all those involved in the crime are brought to justice, urging members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information.
