Apprentice, 21, Confesses To Killing Master With Pestle After Being Reprimanded Over Theft, Drug Use

A 21-year-old apprentice has confessed to fatally striking his master on the head with a pestle and attacking his wife during a violent incident in the early hours of 15th February 2026 in Onitsha, Anambra State.

The suspect, Chiemerie Anieke, was arrested following the death of Mr Ikechukwu Nwite, whom he allegedly killed with the household implement. The pestle used in the attack has been recovered from the scene by police officers.

According to preliminary investigations, the tragic incident was triggered after the deceased had admonished the suspect over a pattern of misconduct. It is understood that Mr Nwite had confronted Anieke about pilfering money meant for the shop, staying out late at night, and suspected drug use.

During the altercation that followed, the suspect allegedly struck his master on the head with the pestle. He also attacked Mrs Ogechukwu Nwite, who was rescued and taken to hospital, where she is said to be responding to treatment.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for a comprehensive investigation.

“The suspect is in custody and has confessed to the crime,” SP Ikenga stated. “We have recovered the weapon and are conducting a thorough investigation to ensure that justice is served in this matter.”

The incident, which occurred in the Fegge area of Onitsha, has left residents in a state of shock. However, community members have commended the quick response of the Fegge Police Station in apprehending the suspect.

Anieke remains in police custody as investigations continue.
