BREAKING: CP Oyeniyi Assumes Duty As Delta Police Commissioner, Succeeds Adesola

ASABA – The Delta State Police Command has a new helmsman Commissioner of Police Yemi John Oyeniyi has officially taken over as the 24th Commissioner of Police for the state, marking a significant transition in the command’s leadership.

CP Oyeniyi steps into the role following the tenure of CP Aina Adesola. A native of Oyun Local Government Area in Kwara State, born 5th March 1969, the new CP is no stranger to the state. He previously served in the Delta Command from 2000 to 2005, where he cut his teeth as Officer-in-Charge of General Investigation and later the Anti-Fraud Units at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).

A seasoned officer with a career spanning over 30 years since his enlistment in 1994, CP Oyeniyi brings a wealth of international experience to his new post. He spent three years (2007–2010) on peacekeeping operations in Sudan, serving under both the African Mission in Sudan (AMIS) and the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS).

His academic profile is equally robust. Holding a B.Sc. in Sociology from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (1991) and an M.Sc. in Public Order & Information Management from the University of Uyo (2023), he is also an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (acipm) and a member of the National Institute of Police Studies (mnips).

The officer’s recent postings include a stint as Deputy Commissioner of Police (Administration) in Ondo State (2023–2025) and a role as Commissioner of Police and Deputy Head of the Interpol National Central Bureau (NCB) in Abuja, a position he held until his redeployment to Delta in May 2025.

Throughout his career, CP Oyeniyi has built a reputation for discipline, strategic leadership, and expertise in criminal investigation and anti-fraud operations. He has attended several professional courses, including the Strategic Leadership and Command Course (SLCC) in 2021.

A family man who is happily married with children, the new Commissioner is known to enjoy listening to music and watching football during his downtime.

His assumption of duty was confirmed by the command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, signalling a new era of leadership for the Delta State Police Command.
