Delta Police Launch Investigation After Viral Video Alleges Woman Given Over 40 Strokes of Cane

ASABA — The Delta State Police Command has launched an urgent investigation into a viral video circulating on X and other social media platforms, which alleges that police officers assaulted a woman and subjected her to more than 40 strokes of cane.

The video captures the victim narrating her ordeal in distressing detail.

In a press release issued on 25th April 2026, the Command confirmed that the Commissioner of Police for Delta State has ordered an immediate and thorough probe into the incident.

Preliminary steps have already been taken to verify the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault and to establish the identities of the officers involved.

The matter has been referred to the appropriate investigative unit for discreet handling, while efforts are ongoing to ensure that all implicated personnel are identified and brought to account.

The Command has urged the victim and the activist who shared the video to come forward and provide all necessary information to help identify the officers alleged to have been involved and to aid the ongoing investigation.

In a strongly worded statement, the Delta State Police Command unequivocally condemned any form of assault, brutality, or abuse of citizens, describing such conduct as inconsistent with the ethics, standards, and core values of the Nigeria Police Force.

The Commissioner of Police reiterated that the Command would not tolerate any action that violates the rights and dignity of members of the public. Any officer found culpable will be dealt with decisively in accordance with the Police Act and other extant regulations. The Commissioner emphasised that under his leadership, professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights remain non-negotiable.

The Command assured the victim of its commitment to justice, including confidentiality, protection, and full institutional support throughout the investigative process. Members of the public who may have useful information, eyewitness accounts, or additional video evidence have also been encouraged to come forward to assist with inquiries.
