Police Officer Who Shot Dead Suspect In Delta Sent To Abuja For Trial

Rita Enemuru, Reporting

ASABA — The Delta State Police Command has arrested and transferred one of its own officers to Force Headquarters in Abuja after he fatally shot a suspect in Effurun on Sunday, in what the Commissioner of Police has condemned as an “extra-judicial killing”.

The victim, Mene Ogidi, aged 28, died on 26th April 2026 after ASP Nuhu Usman, the officer leading an operational team, discharged his firearm in clear violation of Force Order 237 and standard police procedure, according to a statement released today by police spokesperson SP. Bright Edafe.

The incident unfolded after members of the public tipped off police that Ogidi was allegedly attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.

Operatives from Area Command Effurun were deployed to the scene, and the suspect was apprehended. But instead of securing the arrest, ASP Usman opened fire, killing him.

Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, immediately ordered the Area Commander in Effurun to arrest the officer and transfer him to Asaba for disciplinary action.

ASP Usman has since been issued a query and moved to Abuja, where he will appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee, currently in session, to face immediate disciplinary sanction and potential prosecution.

“The Command, in line with the policy of the Nigeria Police Force, emphasises respect for the rule of law, human rights, professionalism, accountability and public trust,” the statement read. It reaffirmed the force’s “zero tolerance for lawlessness, recklessness and extra-judicial conduct”.

CP Oyeniyi extended his sincere condolences to the family, friends, and concerned members of the public, assuring them that the command is fully committed to ensuring justice is served.

He appealed for calm, urging residents to remain law-abiding while authorities take all necessary steps to bring the culprit to book.
