Delta Police Deny Role in Asaba Shooting as Probe Launched into ‘Aboy’ Incident

Delta Police Net Suspected Drug Baron, Two Women in Warri Raid

ASABA — The Delta State Police Command has strongly denied allegations that its officers were responsible for a shooting incident in the Ogbilọ area of Ogbeogonogo Market, Asaba, on 6 May 2026.

The denial comes following a viral video showing a young man, locally known as “Aboy”, with injuries, while passersby are heard accusing the police of opening fire.

In an official statement issued on 7 May, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, insisted that no police operatives were involved in any shooting at the said location on the date in question.

According to the Command, preliminary findings suggest that Aboy is suspected of being involved in cult-related activities.

It was further revealed that he had been shot four years ago during a previous cult-related incident.

The statement also noted that the victim’s friend, whose identity remains unknown, was taken away from the scene by the attackers – a detail which, the police say, points more towards an abduction than any law enforcement operation.

Crucially, the Command confirmed that the friend is not in any of its detention facilities, adding that there is “no verifiable fact” to link the police to the shooting.

Aboy is currently receiving treatment for his injuries.

In response to the public outcry generated by the viral footage, the Commissioner of Police for Delta State, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, has ordered the Command’s Anti-Cultism Unit to launch a full-scale, detailed investigation into the incident.

The Command has appealed to members of the public to seek facts before drawing conclusions and has urged anyone with useful information to come forward via the following hotlines:

· Command Control Room: 08036684974

· Complaint Response Unit: 09155570008 or 09011112311

“The Delta State Police Command remains resolute in its fight against cultism and other violent crimes,” SP Edafe added.
