A 34-year-old woman has appeared before an Ogba Magistrate Court accused of attacking a rival with a pestle and pouring hot soup over her during a dispute.
Sofilat Yaro allegedly struck Fatimo Mohammed on the head with the kitchen implement before dousing her in hot tuwo and soup following an argument at their residence in the Agbole area of Isheri on 18th April 2026.
Police reports indicate that what began as a verbal disagreement between the two women escalated dramatically when Yaro resorted to the unusual combination of weapons. The victim sustained injuries to her head from the pestle blow in addition to burns from the hot foodstuffs.
Officers from Isheri Division arrested Yaro following a report from the injured woman. After questioning, police determined there was sufficient evidence to bring charges before the court.
The charge sheet states that Yaro “did unlawfully assault one Fatimo Mohammed by using a pestle on her head, pouring hot soup and hot tuwo on her body, which caused her grievous harm” – an offence contrary to Section 245 of the criminal law of Lagos State 2015.
Yaro entered a plea of not guilty during her arraignment.
Prosecutor Supol Josephine Ihkayere requested that a hearing date be set to allow police to prove their case against the defendant.
Presiding Magistrate Mr L.A. Owolabi granted bail on condition that Yaro produce two sureties capable of demonstrating proof of livelihood and tax payment, with addresses to be verified by the court.
The defendant has been remanded in custody at Kirikiri Town correctional centre in Lagos pending the perfection of her bail conditions. The matter has been adjourned for further mention.
