A heartbreaking account has emerged on social media detailing the death of a young woman who reportedly took her own life a fortnight after returning home from a kidnappers’ den.
The woman, who was abducted earlier this year while making her way home from work, had been released following weeks of intense negotiations between her family and her captors, according to the viral post.
A colleague of the victim shared the harrowing account online, revealing the immense toll the ordeal had taken on both the woman and her loved ones.
Family ‘Raised Ransom Against Heavy Odds’
The narrator explained that relatives, friends and well-wishers had rallied together to secure the victim’s release. They contributed funds and took out loans after an initial ransom demand was made.
“The parents ran from place to place to gather the ransom after negotiations reduced the demand,” the colleague wrote. “Family members and friends contributed what they could until the money was raised.”
The family reportedly spent weeks in negotiations with the abductors before the woman was finally set free.
Survivor Disclosed ‘Severe Abuse’
According to the account, the victim later opened up about the conditions she endured while in captivity, revealing she had suffered severe abuse that left her deeply traumatised.
She struggled emotionally in the days following her return home, the narrator said.
“She told us about the conditions she endured while being held,” the colleague recounted. “Two weeks after she came back, we lost her.”
Calls for Better Trauma Support
The distressing case has reignited conversations across Nigeria about insecurity, the psychological impact of kidnapping, and the lack of adequate mental health support for survivors of violent crime.
Similar debates emerged in 2024 following reports that many abduction victims required long-term psychological care after regaining their freedom.
While the allegations contained in the social media post remain independently unverified, the story has provoked widespread reactions, with many Nigerians calling for stronger security measures and improved mental health services for survivors.
