An accountant with the Delta State Polytechnic, Oghara, Nigeria, Chief Oviri Onorigho, has been nabbed by police operatives with a firearm in his possession.
The 52-year-old was arrested by operatives of the Delta State Police Command on Friday at his residence.
Speaking on the arrest, the Police Public Relations Officer, S.P Bright Edafe, disclosed that Chief Onorigho was taken into custody after a Baretta Pistol loaded with four rounds of live ammunition was recovered from his apartment.
The suspect, who was alleged to be a member of Aiye confraternity, confessed to have purchased the pistol at N250,000 for his personal protection.
He also stated that one gift Newworld was arrested at Ekpan, Uvwie Local Government Area for allegedly stealing a pumping machine from a compound on Friday, May 17.
The Suspects and firearms recovered
Upon his arrest, a locally-made cut-to-size double barrel gun, and three live cartridges were recovered from his hideout.
Further investigation led to the arrest of the suspect’s gang member Izobo Okwe, who later confessed to being the owner of the gun and a member of the gang.
Edafe also spoke on the arrest of one Emeka Okorie aged 32yrs who allegedly stole a truck from Umuasea Bus Stop in Udi Local Government Area Enugu State.
While the suspect was arrested, his accomplices fled during the ensuing commotion.
However, a cut-to-size locally-made double barrel pistol and four live cartridges were recovered when a search was conducted on the stolen truck.
In response to these arrests, the Commissioner of Police, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi noted that being in possession of firearms of any kind is strictly prohibited and anyone caught will be decisively dealt with in accordance with the law.
