See why Houston police filed charges against suspect

CHARGES have been filed against a suspect arrested after opening fire at Houston Police officers at 1006 Kress Street about 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

According to Houston Police Department, the 40-year-old suspect, Juan Alberto Gallegos, was charged with aggravated assault against a public servant in the 339th State District Court.

HPD Officers J. Luna, D. Zhu and Probationary Police Officer B. Martel, who discharged their duty weapons, were not injured in the incident.

CrimesChroniclers reports that Officers Luna, Zhu and Martel are assigned to the Northeast Patrol Division and were sworn in as officers in August 2021, March 2019 and June 2024, respectively.

Houston Police Department Special Investigations Unit Detectives C. Walker and H. Le reported:

“HPD patrol officers responded to a family disturbance with a weapon call at a residence at the above address after a caller reported the suspect (her boyfriend’s father) was intoxicated and threatened to harm her, her boyfriend and her boyfriend’s juvenile sister with a handgun.

“Officers arrived and were able to get the caller, her boyfriend and the boyfriend’s sister out of the residence safely without the suspect knowing.

“Officers then established contact with the suspect, later identified as Gallegos.

“Gallegos emerged several times from the front door and spoke with officers, but refused to open the iron fence gate.

“About an hour later, Gallegos opened the front door, produced a gun and pointed it at officers outside.

“Gallegos fired at least once at officers, who returned fired. Gallegos then went back inside the residence. No one was struck.

“Officers took cover and waited for HPD SWAT officers to arrive.

“About an hour later, Gallegos was taken into custody by responding SWAT officers without further incident.

“The Harris County District Attorney’s Office was contacted and Gallegos was subsequently charged for his role in the incident.

“As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the Houston city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit and the Internal Affairs Division.”
