THE Delta State Police Command has declared an all-out offensive against drug cartels following the tragic death of a 15-year-old boy who allegedly overdosed on prescription medication supplied by a friend.

The incident, which occurred in the Orogun area, has prompted the Command to ramp up intelligence-led operations targeting drug dens, blackspots, and criminal hideouts across the state. Authorities say the move is part of sustained efforts to dismantle drug networks, prevent avoidable deaths, and curb associated crimes such as cultism and violence.

According to a statement released by the Command, the deceased, Gift Oberhirhi, aged 15, allegedly abused Dexamethasone tablets provided by his friend, Destiny Akpofure, also 15. The boy took fifteen tablets without a doctor’s prescription, falling ill shortly afterwards. He died while being transported for medical attention.

Police operatives responded to the scene and conveyed the body to the General Hospital Mortuary in Orogun, where an autopsy is expected to be conducted. The suspect has been arrested and remains in custody as investigations continue.

The Command described the case as a stark illustration of the public safety risks posed by the illegal distribution and misuse of drugs, particularly among vulnerable young people. It underscored the urgency of ongoing enforcement actions aimed at disrupting those engaged in the unlawful sale and distribution of controlled substances.

Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi John Oyeniyi, reiterated the Command’s commitment to the protection of lives and property, assuring the public that all necessary measures would be taken to address drug-related crimes across the state.

Members of the public have been urged to remain vigilant and to report any suspected drug sale, use, or other suspicious activity to the nearest police station.
