A 39-year-old man, Jubril Kingsley, has been remanded in custody after being charged with the statutory rape of a health-challenged 18-year-old woman in Lagos State.
According to police reports, the incident took place in January 2026 at Iyana Ejo Street, off Unity Road in the Ikotun area of Lagos, where both parties reside.
Prosecutors allege that Mr Kingsley went to the location where the victim was being kept and forcibly had sexual intercourse with her. He was caught at the scene, and the matter was reported to the Ikotun Police Division.
Officers arrested the suspect and detained him for questioning. During interrogation, Mr Kingsley allegedly claimed that the victim was an adult, despite acknowledging her significant health challenges. Police investigators found him culpable and brought charges against him at the Ogba Magistrate’s Court.
The charge sheet states that Mr Kingsley “did unlawfully have sexual intercourse with the victim, female 18 years old, who had health challenges by penetrating her vagina with your manhood”. The offence is said to be contrary to and punishable under Section 260 of the Lagos State Criminal Law, 2015.
The court did not take the defendant’s plea after the prosecutor, Inspector Lucky Ihiehie, requested that the matter be referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.
Presiding Magistrate, Mrs M.O. Tanimola, ordered that Mr Kingsley be remanded at the correctional centre in Kirikiri town, Lagos, pending the outcome of the DPP’s report. She also instructed the prosecutor to duplicate the case file and forward it to the DPP without delay.
The case has been adjourned for mention, at which point the DPP’s advice will determine whether the matter is transferred to the High Court due to jurisdictional requirements. Statutory rape carries a penalty of several years’ imprisonment under Lagos State law.
