THE Delta State Police Command has recorded a major breakthrough in its fight against crime with the arrest of suspected armed robbers and the recovery of a stolen luxury vehicle, firearms, and other valuables in a series of coordinated operations across the state.

Led by Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, the command launched swift, intelligence-led interventions in Asaba and Ogwashi-Ukwu that resulted in significant seizures and arrests.

Stolen Mercedes Benz GLK Recovered in Asaba

On 5 August 2025, acting on credible intelligence, officers from B Division Asaba, under the leadership of CSP Edewor Akponegware, intercepted an attempt to sell a stolen Mercedes Benz GLK at a parking lot on Former Deputy Road, Asaba.

The suspect, identified as Chinedu Eze, was arrested while trying to sell the vehicle. Investigations revealed the vehicle was originally registered in April 2023 and had been re-registered under suspicious circumstances in 2025. Contact with the initial owner confirmed the car had been violently snatched at gunpoint in Enugu State, during which the victim was shot. The vehicle has now been returned to its rightful owner.

Armed Robbery Foiled in Ogwashi-Ukwu

In the early hours of 4 August 2025, a distress call reported an ongoing armed robbery along Chelsea Street, Ogwashi-Ukwu. Officers from the Ogwashi-Ukwu Police Station, led by CSP Okoyomon Israel and supported by local vigilante groups, swiftly responded.

Two suspects, Thywill Selvin (22) and Guntim Bako (32), were apprehended as they attempted to flee. Recovered from the scene were:

  • One pump-action rifle with one live cartridge

  • One Beretta pistol with six rounds of ammunition

  • One locally made pistol with one live cartridge

  • Three live assault rifle rounds

  • Two stolen motorcycles

  • Twenty-five mobile phones

  • Four laptops, a tablet phone, a PS4 console, a home theatre set, music players, and other valuables

Several victims have already identified their stolen property.

Police Commissioner Commends Public, Urges Vigilance

CP Abaniwonda praised the professionalism and quick response of the officers involved, stressing the importance of community cooperation. “These successes were possible due to timely intelligence from the public,” he said. “We will sustain our aggressive, intelligence-led approach to make Delta State safer.”

He urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activity, reaffirming the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
