THE Delta State Police Command has announced sweeping new security measures across the state as part of efforts to strengthen public safety, combat rising criminal activity, and improve emergency response systems.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Command said the move follows a comprehensive review of the security situation in Delta State and aligns with directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, mandating all police commands nationwide to intensify visibility policing, intelligence-led operations, and community partnerships.
Under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Yemi Oyeniyi, the Command has begun massive deployment of personnel across all nine Area Commands, divisions, and other strategic locations.
This includes heightened stop-and-search operations on major highways, entry and exit routes, as well as intensified day-and-night patrols in identified flashpoints.
The police said their renewed operational focus will prioritise the protection of lives and property, maintenance of law and order, prevention of unlawful gatherings, disruption of criminal hideouts, and stronger community intelligence gathering.
Special targeted operations are also being intensified in areas affected by kidnapping and herdsmen-related crimes, including Owa-Oyibu, Ogwashi-Uku power line axis, Okpanam, Ashaka, Ovwero in Ughelli North, Umunede, Igbodo, Idumusa, Ute, and several border communities.
The Command says the aim is to dismantle criminal networks, restore public confidence, and secure all entry and exit corridors into the state.
As part of the strategy, all Area Commanders have been directed to convene stakeholders’ town hall meetings in their respective jurisdictions to deepen collaboration with residents and improve intelligence sharing.
The Police Command has urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities through its emergency control room lines, while also encouraging residents to use the Complaint Response Unit channels to report police misconduct or human rights violations.
Commissioner Oyeniyi reassured residents that the police remain committed to protecting lives and property, urging citizens to avoid spreading unverified information capable of causing panic and to support security agencies with timely and credible intelligence.
Police spokesperson SP Bright Edafe said officers deployed for the operations have been instructed to carry out their duties professionally, with full respect for human rights and zero tolerance for misconduct.
