RESIDENTS of Ejewhor Street in the Okumagba Layout area of Warri, Delta State, on Tuesday apprehended a 23-year-old man, identified as Prosper Ibekwe, over alleged involvement in the theft of a mobile phone.
The suspect was subjected to a severe beating by members of the community before being handed over to the authorities.

According to eyewitnesses, Ibekwe was accused of acting in connivance with another individual who reportedly stole a mobile phone belonging to a resident in the area.
Upon searching him, residents found several items in his possession, including a pair of palm slippers, a large spanner, a DV player, a measuring tape, and a hammer.
Speaking with our correspondent, Ibekwe denied any involvement in the theft, maintaining his innocence.
He claimed that he merely picked up the palm slippers belonging to the actual suspect during the commotion as the individual was being chased.

“I didn’t know the person had stolen anything,” Ibekwe said. “I just picked up the slippers when he ran off. That’s when the people saw me and thought I was part of it.”
He added that while he does not know the suspect personally or his residence, he is aware of a location where the individual may be found.
At the time of reporting, it was unclear whether Ibekwe had been formally charged or released pending further investigation.
